Hello everyone! Today I want to share with you three different ways to make headbands for a girl. I already have a tutorial on how to make headband using Ankara fabric, but today I’ll be using fabric from T-shirts.
One of the best fabrics to use for headband is a knit fabric, that’s because it stretches on its own and you won’t need to add an elastic band. However any T-shirt that stretches works just fine too, and since I have a couple of them that no longer fit, it’s just a perfect idea to make headbands for my daughter. For this tutorial; I first explained how to make a basic band, then a ruffled flower, a ribbon bow, and a reversible headband.
Materials for making headbands
- T-shirt (or any stretchy fabric)
- Fabric glue
- Measuring tape
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
Steps for making a band
Cut out a rectangle with a width of 4 inches (you can adjust this width depending on how wide you want the band). The length should be circumference of baby’s head.
Sew on longest part of the rectangle with right sides facing, leaving out the sides.
Turn right side out, turn inside out again halfway with seams touching.
Sew seams, leaving about an inch opening ( I prefer to hand sew here, because it’s just easier).
Turn right side out using that opening and sew to close the opening.
Steps for making ruffled flower
Cut out 4 large and 5 small circles.
Take one of the circles, fold in half and glue in place. Fold in half again and glue. Repeat this step with all the large circles and 4 of the small ones. Set aside for a few minutes to dry.
Attach the 4 large circles to the last small circle, using the glue.
Attach the small circle on top, lift edges of all the circles to form a beautiful flower. (I added a pearl from an old earring)
Glue the flower to the band.
Make band following the steps above, but this time use two different fabrics.
Cut two pieces of fabric 9 by 2 inches. Cut round the corners. sew with right sides facing and turn around. Wear band two ways; with either sides of the fabric showing, or simply tie your 9 Inches fabric to band.
Cut out five strips of ribbon; two 7 inches, one 6 inches, another 3.75 inches, and 3 inches wide. Burn ends of the ribbon with fire, to make it firm and prevent from fraying.
Join ends of the 7 and 6 inches ribbon together into a loop. Press the loop to flatten out.
Join 7 inches loops in x-shape. Join the 6 inches in the centre
Cut triangular notches on the edges of the 3.75 inches ribbon, and glue to the backside of bow.
Wrap with a thread and tie tightly.
Wrap the last 3 inches ribbon around the bow to cover up the thread.
Attach bow to the band!
Try making these beautiful headbands for your baby girl today, I’m sure you’ll have fun while working on them. Till I come your way again with another fantastic DIY project. Have a wonderful week!
