Read the Bible.

How often do you read your Bible? I know you take the Bible to church and open it when the sermon is on, but is that all? Do you ever make time to read the Bible, or are you ever too busy for that?

So, you’re a Christian, yet you don’t read the Bible? If you can answer sincerely and confirm that you don’t read your Bible, then I’m wondering what you base your life on. What principles do you live by and stand for? Are you simply living based on what the pastor, or priest tells you or are you studying to find out facts for yourself?

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God (Romans 12:2). This means as Christians, we are suppose to live by the standard of God. How do we do that? Simply, by reading the word of God. I believe the problem with most Christians today is that we don’t read our Bibles. As such, we are oblivious of Biblical principles and conduct.

You may ask; why do I need to read the Bible? You may believe that the sermon from church is good enough, but it isn’t. It is great to go to church and be in the presence of God, it is even more important to search the scriptures and have a personal time to read the Bible.Therefore, why do you need to read the Bible? You need to read the bible to;

Learn how to live. It is almost impossible to fully know what living like Jesus Christ, and living to please God means without constantly reading the word. When you don’t read the word of God, you don’t know the mind of God and without knowing the mind of God how do you expect to please Him? The Bible is full of instructions and commandments, it is important to know and discover them for ourselves.

Stay away from sin. Whatever we do that displeases God is sin. Whatever is not right is sin. How then do we determine what is right? Read the word of God. Like we just read in Romans 12:2; we are suppose to renew our minds in the word of God daily, we are not to live based on the standard of the word but on what is acceptable and perfect before God. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.( Psalm 119:11)

Be successful. You want to be prosperous and to have good success, read the word of God. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success (Joshua 1:8). For exploits in everything you set out to do , read the word of God. And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits (Daniel 11:32).

In addition, we need to also bear in mind that the Bible is not just a novel or a history book. It is the word of God and must be taken seriously. We must read the Bible as a special book that it is. How then can you read the word?

A conscious effort. You have to consciously make up your mind to start reading the Bible. It must be a personal decision, not seeking to please anybody, but a decision taken to build your spiritual life. Then have a plan; you can decide to wake up earlier than usual and spend time to study the word, or you can decide to do so at the end of the day before going to bed. Also remember to eliminate all forms of distraction and focus on spending time in the presence of God, reading the Bible, praying, and seeking God’s face.

Meditate on the word. Joshua 1:8 emphasizes the need to meditate on the word of God day and night. One man of God I love so much is Robert Liardon. In his book “The School of the Spirit” he shares that Christians ought to “eat the word”. Read the word of God with all seriousness, that you don’t only eat it, but you chew it real good. Meditate on the word day and night; memorise Bible passages, think it constantly that it settles in your conscious and unconscious, and becomes a part of you.

Ask the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is available to help us in our Christian life (John 14:26). As you decide to begin reading the word of God, you need the help of the Holy Spirit to do so. What I usually do is to pray for the Holy Spirit to be with me as I read, and to give me understanding. Without the help of the Holy Spirit, you will not get deep revelation from the word of God. Go on your knees today, and ask for the help of the Holy Spirit.

In conclusion; you need the word of God to learn how to live daily lives according to God’s principles, to stay away from sin, and to have a successful life. How to read the word is to; make a conscious effort, meditate on the word till it becomes a part of you, and most importantly, ask the help of the Holy Spirit.

I urge you today to make out time to read your Bible. Open it, read for yourself and learn from God yourself.  God bless you!
