DIY travel neck pillow

Travel neck pillow

Hello lovelies! Welcome to my blog! If you’re new here, you are most welcome, and please don’t forget to subscribe to this blog. Today, I want to show you how to make a neck pillow. Last week, I decided to use this month of November to share some DIY travel essential projects. Since the holidays are here already and there will be lots of traveling this season, I figured out this is the perfect time to work on some simple projects that will make your travel easier and interesting. I started this series by making a fabric travel wallet; had fun working on that project, so here’s another fun and cool project.

The neck pillow comes in handy when you are traveling by air on even on a long road trip. Sometimes, the head rest of the plane or car may not be comfortable, and you end up with neck pain by the time you arrive your destination. Well, you can put all those days of tiredness and neck pain behind you with the use of this neck pillow. Also, no need to spend money buying a neck pillow, when you can make one for yourself and other family members in just few minutes (you know me, I’m all about saving money and being frugal).

This tutorial, like most of my DIY projects, is easy to follow. However, a pattern is needed for this project, so get the pattern you can; draw it from scratch, trace out from a pillow you already own, or be like me and download free patterns from online. I found two free and simple patterns online from CraftyGemini and TREASURIE Get your pattern ready, and let’s make our lovely neck pillow!

Materials needed for making a neck pillow

  • 1/2 yard fabric (I used the same Ankara fabric in my passport wallet tutorial)
  • Polyester fillings for the pillow
  • Scissors (one for cutting paper, another for fabric)
  • Sewing machine
  • Cellotape, or glue

Steps for making a neck pillow

Step 1: Prepare pattern (I used the one from TREASURIE). The pattern comes in two pages, cut out with a paper scissors and glue together with the tape.

Step 2: Place the part of pattern with arrow on folded side of fabric, and cut out two pieces.

Place pattern on fabric

Cut out two pieces of fabric
Step 3: Cut out another piece of fabric, about 4inches by 2inches. Fold it into half with right sides facing and sew round the edges. Turn the piece right side out (this will serve as a loop or handle of the neck pillow; use this to attach pillow to backpack or luggage)

Cut out loop for neck pillow
Step 4: Place the two pieces of fabric together, with right sides facing. Position the fabric piece sewn above in the middle of the two pieces, and sew round all the edges with a quarter inch seam allowance. Leave about two inches opening, to turn the neck pillow right side out.

Step 5: Clip the corners with a scissors; this will help reduce bulk on the pillow and give it a clean finish.

Sew round edges of neck pillow
Step 6: Turn the sewn piece right side out using the 2inch opening, and iron.

Iron right side out
Step 7: Hand sew round snaps to loop and body of the pillow.

Sew snaps to the strip
Step 8: Fill your pillow with; polyester, foam, scraps of fabric or whatever you have (note that less stuff in makes a soft and fluffy pillow)

Step 9: Hand sew and close the 2 inch opening.

Voila! Your pillow is done. See how easy that was? This is a project you can make even few minutes before embarking on a journey. How cool is that?!
